Merrick signs with Seawolves soccer
(Saint John, NB) Gavin Merrick has officially signed with the Seawolves soccer program for the 2025 season. Coming to UNB Saint John from Mississauga, Ontario, head coach PJ Ward is looking forward to the level of play Merrick will bring this season.
"He has a high soccer IQ that helps him break down the opposing teams' defences and create goal scoring opportunities," Ward said.
Merrick has played in the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) from U13 to U17 With North Mississauga Soccer Club and Rush Canada. He currently plays U18 with Stella Rossa Football Club.
"Soccer has given me the opportunity to develop my skills as well as other important personal attributes like positive and effective communication, determination, consistency, and commitment," Merrick said.
Not only does he have a love for the sport himself, but he's also been able to share his passion with young athletes through volunteer work with the Erin Mills Soccer Club. "I love soccer and wanted to share that feeling by helping coach the young players and helping them have positive game-day experiences," he said.
In addition to his high-level play, Merrick is also academically successful, achieving honour roll grades 9, 10 and 11. He was awarded the Grade 10 Certificate of Academic Excellence for Health and Physical Education.
Merrick will study Business Administration at UNB Saint John, with plans to own his own business in the future.
Welcome to the Seawolves family, Gavin!
