Women’s basketball welcomes first recruit of the 2025 season
(Saint John, NB) Reese Smith has officially signed with the Seawolves women's basketball team for the 2025 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) season.
A native of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Smith is currently completing her Grade 12 at Shelburne Regional High School.
"Smith will bring additional offensive production to our team with her ability to score and distribute the ball to her teammates," said head coach Moira Gagnon. "Her physical style of play will also be an asset in rebounding and defense," she added.
Smith has had a notable sports career so far, including winning the Ron O'Flaherty Award in Grade 9 and being named MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in basketball. She was also the basketball team captain in Grades 11 and 12, led her team to D3 Regional Championships in Grade 11, and was recognized as Senior Girls' Athlete of the Year.
"When I visited UNBSJ, all the girls on the team were amazing, and they were there to answer any questions I had and show me around. I loved the campus and the immediate sense of being part of a family," said Smith.
Being deeply involved in sports over the years, Smith enjoys giving back to the community through her volunteer work. She has volunteered with the Municipality of Shelburne, the Shelburne County Basketball Association (SCBA) basketball team, and Hillcrest Academy, where she helped coach and read to students from 2020 to 2025.
"Watching young kids learn and enjoy the sport you love and being able to be a part of that process, is so rewarding," she said.
Smith will be studying for a Bachelor of Science with aspirations to become an x-ray technician.
"My goals next season as an athlete are to learn how to adjust to a new level of play, take in all the experiences, and have lots of fun while doing it," she said.
Welcome to the Seawolves family, Reese!
