(Saint John, NB) The UNB Saint John Seawolves earned a gritty 3–2 win over the St. Thomas Tommies today, Thursday, October 9th, on a windy afternoon at Canada Games Stadium, with both teams
showing resilience and quality throughout the 90 minutes.
The swirling wind played a major role in the match, influencing passes, shots, and set pieces and free kicks on both ends. The Seawolves adjusted quickly, taking advantage of early pressure to grab the lead in the opening minutes when a St. Thomas own goal put UNBSJ ahead 1–0. Building on the momentum, Lily Karns doubled the lead in the 22nd minute with a composed finish, and Scarlette McDonald added another just before halftime, heading home off a well-placed Grace Gordon corner to make it 3–0 at the break. The Tommies found their footing in the second half with the wind finally on their side, fighting back with goals from Olivia Fillmore in the 60th minute and Virginia Phillips in the 73rd to close the gap. Despite the late push, Seawolves goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brzezicki made several key saves to preserve the narrow victory.
UNBSJ's rookies continued to impress, showing maturity and composure well beyond their years in challenging conditions. Their energy, discipline, and poise were vital in maintaining control as the Tommies surged late in the match. Both teams finished nearly even on shots, with St. Thomas edging UNBSJ 7–6, but the Seawolves' first-half execution proved to be the
difference.
