Bouzingou Comes Up Big in Seawolves 3-0 Win Against Chargers
Saint John, NB – The University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves dispatched the visiting Crandall University Chargers in straight sets (25-12, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletic Centre.
The first set started off with the Chargers jumping out to a quick 4-2 lead before 4th year left side, Emily Robichaud (Hanwell, NB), stepped to the service line to begin a 13-point run for the Seawolves that included 3 aces from Robichaud.
"Emily has been a great leader and that's kind of been the story of her career here," said head coach, Colin Chambers. "When we have found ourselves in tough situations she comes up with a serving run for us. She's worked on her serve a lot and added more consistency to it this year."
Joining Robichaud in helping the Seawolves to a 25-12 opening set victory was 2nd year middle, Elenna Bouzingou (Saint John, NB). In just her second Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) start, Bouzingou exploded for 5 kills on 5 attempts and added 4 block assists. Bouzingou would end up finishing the match with 8 kills on 10 attempts (.800) along with the 4 block assists and 1 service ace.
"I felt like the energy from the team today was really good, the team was giving good vibes," said the 2nd year middle. "We have been working really hard in practice to get our middle timing down, and Kyra [McCord] has been really good adjusting to our middles this season."
The Chargers would battle in both the 2nd and 3rd sets, led by 5th year left side, Jolie Allain (Miramichi, NB), who finished the match with a game high 11 kills.
"One of our big goals this semester has been to not let up when we get that lead. Last semester we had a lot of games where we were up 2-0 and let it slip to a 4th or 5th set, or even a loss, so being able to finish off the match in the third set has been a big focus for us," added Chambers.
The Seawolves (8-4) will be back in action Sunday when they host the Mount Allison University Mounties (12-3) at 12:00pm, while the Chargers (5-8) will have to wait until January 31st to host the University of King's College Blue Devils (1-12).
