UNBSJ defends home court in Kingston Cup showdown with commanding win over Mount Allison
The Kingston Cup once again belonged to the home side as the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves put together a complete performance to defeat Mount Allison University 94 to 64 on Sunday. With the rivalry trophy on the line and UNBSJ having claimed the Cup last season, the Seawolves came out with energy from the opening tip and never let the moment get too big.
UNBSJ wasted no time setting the tone. Ethan Szemerda opened the scoring with an early three, and the Seawolves' pressure immediately created problems for Mount Allison. Daren Clarke controlled the glass and the pace, while Ryan Pollard and Doyle Burton finished efficiently inside as UNBSJ built a steady first quarter cushion. Even when the Mounties answered with tough buckets from Jonas Munroe, the Seawolves' ball movement kept producing quality looks, leading to a 28 to 24 edge after one.
The game truly swung in the second quarter. UNBSJ tightened up defensively and turned stops into transition chances. Lance Howlett provided a major spark off the bench, knocking down shots and attacking gaps, while Aj Nash added timely scoring and playmaking. Clarke continued to impact every area by cleaning up the glass and showcasing his tough shot making. The Seawolves outscored Mount Allison 24 to 10 in the frame to take a firm 52 to 34 halftime lead.
Mount Allison pushed back in the third behind Munroe's scoring and second chance efforts, but every run was answered. Pollard's work on the boards created extra possessions, Burton battled inside, and Clarke hit big perimeter shots to keep the margin comfortable. UNBSJ's depth also showed, with multiple players contributing on both ends to maintain control.
In the fourth, the Seawolves slammed the door. Nash attacked downhill and stretched the defence with outside shooting, Howlett continued his strong night, his defence forced turnovers that led to easy points. UNBSJ closed the game on a strong note, outscoring the Mounties 26 to 11 in the final quarter to seal the 30 point win.
Clarke led the all around effort with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists, Nash poured in 16, and Howlett added 17 off the bench. Burton and Pollard each chipped in 12 and 10, respectively, highlighting the balanced attack. For Mount Allison, Munroe's 22 points and 9 rebounds stood out, but the Seawolves' defensive pressure and rebounding advantage proved too much over four quarters.
With the victory, UNBSJ not only protected home court but also added another strong chapter to the Kingston Cup rivalry, showing once again why these matchups carry extra intensity every season with Howlett and Munroe winning player of the game for each side.
