Back-and-Forth Battle Goes to Holland in Four Sets
(Saint John, NB) UNBSJ fell 3–1 to Holland College on Sunday afternoon in a match that stayed close from start to finish, with both teams pushing through long rallies and late-set pressure points. The Seawolves opened strong, taking the first set with composed attacking and steady first contact.
Adam Gauthier led the UNBSJ offense with 11 kills and consistent scoring on the outside. Senior outside hitter Jacob Huisman added eight kills and was effective in transition, while middle blocker Gabe Powell contributed seven kills and key block touches that slowed Holland's rhythm at the net. Setter John MacKinnon worked to spread the ball across the lineup and maintain pace as the match tightened.
Libero John Benfica was a major presence in the backcourt, leading the match in digs and extending multiple rallies that allowed UNBSJ to stay in points late. His serve receive and floor coverage helped the Seawolves remain competitive in the tight third and fourth sets.
Holland's attack was led by outside hitter Brett MacAusland, who finished with 11 kills on efficient hitting and added to the block total at the net. Kieran Hamlin added 10 kills of his own, while Carson Gray contributed nine kills and consistent defensive play in the backcourt. Setter Tyler McBride controlled the Hurricanes' offense with 27 assists and added two aces, helping steer momentum during key stretches. Morgan Hoskins also made a major impact with six kills and five aces, shifting the flow of multiple sets from the service line.
The final two sets were decided by only a handful of points, with Holland converting late swings and serve pressure to close the match.
UNBSJ moves to 1–1 to start the season, showing strong defensive identity, a balanced offensive core, and resilience in extended rallies. The performance provides a firm foundation as conference play continues.
